These days, everyone has a cell phone. They are so common that we often forget how recently they became a part of our lives. Less than ten years ago, hardly anyone had a cell phone.

As cell phones are now everywhere, we have grown accustomed to hearing other people’s conversations in any public place, from the bus to the grocery store. And cell phones ring during movies and concerts. There is currently a debate going on about whether cell phones can used on airplanes.

The phone is now also a potential interruption to our time with friends and family. Watch what happens when Mason gets a cell phone call while he’s talking to Marni.

If you like to dance, you should thank James Brown.

The music of James Brown influenced various music genres, from rock and reggae to jazz and disco. He had various hits over the decades of his amazing music career. Some of his best known songs are I Feel Good, Say it Loud, I’m Black and Proud and Sex Machine.

James Brown was also known for his dancing during his performances. He was quite a dancer, jumping on stage and even doing the splits!

Even though the United States is home to a diverse population, the government is dominated by Caucasian men. Very few people of color even are considered for office. And although the US population is more than half women, women do not make up anywhere close to half the government.

The campaign for the next US President (2008) has already started. And leading the pack of candidates are Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama. This is the first time in US history a woman and an African American have received such serious consideration for the highest office in government.

In the US, many people write thank you notes when they receive a gift. It is considered the minimum courtesy toward the gift-giver to acknowledge the thoughtfulness and usefulness of the gift.

However, many Americans never write thank you notes, the younger generations especially. It seems that we may be losing this custom.

If you are in the States and someone gives you a gift to honor your arrival, your birthday, a holiday or any other occasion, it is best to write them a card thanking them for the gift. It is also nice to thank people who let you stay in their home or cook a meal for you.

A thank you note can be very brief. Here is an example:

Dear Mrs. Robinson,
Thank you so much for the bracelet you gave me for my birthday. It will always remind me of you and of my visit to your city. I appreciate your thinking of me.
Warm regards,
Kaya

After you write it, make sure you have the correct address, put a stamp on it and drop it in the mail.

Volver is the latest film by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar is known for his strong female characters and his unusual stories that capture universal themes on life, love, loss and triumph.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz won both the Golden Globe and the Cannes Film Festival awards for Best Actress. But this is not her first success. She has appeared in numerous films, in English, French, Italian and, of course, Spanish.

England has a great history of filmmaking, but it’s somewhat uncommon for British films to become huge hits in the U.S. – especially if the films are not starring/defHugh Grant. There are some exceptions, such as Trainspotting (1996), The Full Monty (1997), and now Bend It Like Beckham. Bend It is the story of a teenage girl named Jess (Nagra) living in London who must make a choice between following the traditions of her Indian family or pursuing her dream of becoming a soccer sensation.

Mary J. Blige has produced and recorded with some of the best folks in the music business, including Sean Puffy Combs and Dr. Dre. She is widely known as the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul."

At the Grammy Awards a few weeks ago, Blige won three awards: Best R&B Album (for The Breakthrough), Best R&B Song (for Be Without You) and Best R&B Female Vocal Performance. She had more Grammy nominations (a total of eight) for the year than any other artist.

Her performance that night certainly showed why she has earned the respect of her peers and her fans. After having just accepted an award on stage, she sang her heart out and was visibly moved with joy over being so honored.

Borat is the invention of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and was first seen on the UK’s Da Ali G Show. The fictional reporter from Kazakhstan can get an interview with just about anyone, and has elicited some hilarious footage involving powerful politicians as well as regular citizens.

Recently, Cohen made a feature film. It’s a fake documentary that chronicles Borat’s visit to the US. A few scenes are getting the comedian into trouble with some of the people he put in the movie, and the government of Kazakhstan has banned the film. But most movie-goers agree that this flick is hilarious.

Legendary Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki has created another masterpiece. His newest film, Spirited Away, is one of the greatest animated films of all time. Critics and fans from around the world have given Spirited Away the thumbs up. Some have even said it’s the best film created this year.
Spirited Away is very similar to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. It tells the story of a ten-year-old girl named Chihiro who discovers a secret world when she and her family get lost and enter a tunnel. The characters Chihiro encounters are strange, mysterious and endlessly interesting.

A few weeks ago, English, baby! posted a lesson about shaving. Because so many of you had comments, we bring you a similar lesson on the subject.

Many women reach for a razor when they want to make some hair disappear. It’s definitely the cheapest way to get rid of unwanted hair on legs or under arms. But waxing is also very popular. Waxing eyebrows is a lot less painful than plucking them. And many women prefer waxing because it lasts longer than shaving. The hair doesn’t grow back as fast.

Another method of hair removal, laser treatments are also becoming popular, although they are pretty expensive. After a series of laser treatments, the hair will supposedly never grow back. It’s like a permanent shave.

Women aren’t the only ones getting rid of unwanted hair. Men get waxed too. Typically they wax their backs, chests and bellies. It is quite painful and can reduce the most macho guy to tears!

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, the Christmas season is in full-effect! One of the things I like best about Christmas is shopping for gifts for all of my friends and family. Our family is so big that we came up with some alternative options to traditional gift giving.

By now, Madonna’s adopted baby boy from Malawi has probably settled into his new life in America. But a few months ago, he was the subject of controversy.

The adoption has been criticized for many reasons. First, only Malawi residents are usually allowed to adopt Malawi children, but the government made an exception for Madonna. In addition, the boy she chose was not an orphan.

Before the adoption, Madonna had been funding a center in Malawi to help kids who have lost their parents to AIDS. In fact, she plans to spend some $3 million to fight poverty in the African country, and another million on a documentary about the struggle of Malawi children.

Norah Jones has sold more albums than any other artist in the last decade: more than 30 million. And she’s only 27 years old!

Last month, Jones released her third album, titled Not Too Late. All 13 original songs on the album were either written or co-written by Jones.

Many people don’t realize that Jones’ father is the famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar.
