A few weeks ago, English, baby! posted a lesson about shaving. Because so many of you had comments, we bring you a similar lesson on the subject.

Many women reach for a razor when they want to make some hair disappear. It’s definitely the cheapest way to get rid of unwanted hair on legs or under arms. But waxing is also very popular. Waxing eyebrows is a lot less painful than plucking them. And many women prefer waxing because it lasts longer than shaving. The hair doesn’t grow back as fast.

Another method of hair removal, laser treatments are also becoming popular, although they are pretty expensive. After a series of laser treatments, the hair will supposedly never grow back. It’s like a permanent shave.

Women aren’t the only ones getting rid of unwanted hair. Men get waxed too. Typically they wax their backs, chests and bellies. It is quite painful and can reduce the most macho guy to tears!

Over the last decade or so, Americans have developed a reputation for being fat. And not just adults. Children are also dealing with weight problems.

In fact, over the last 20 years, the percentage of children and teenagers who are obese has increased dramatically. And with obesity come other health problems. One of the major ones in diabetes, which now occurs at an alarming rate in young Americans.

There is an infinite number of ways to say hello to someone. Countries and cultures certainly have their own greeting customs, from handshakes (like in the picture) to hugs to kisses. But within each country and culture, there are countless variations, appropriate for different situations.

In the US, in a professional setting like meeting someone for a job interview or greeting a new co-worker, shaking hands is customary. Many people also shake hands in social situations. They shake hands when they are introduced for the first time or when they are saying hello to someone they don’t know that well. But in these same situations, some people just say hi and do not extend their hand.

For closer friendships and family relationships, greetings also vary. Stereotypically, American men are not as affectionate with other men. Even some fathers and sons will simply shake hands, even if they haven’t seen each other for a year. In other families, men hug or kiss each other on the cheek.

Did you see Hollywood director Martin Scorsese win the Academy Award? Many of the men around him hugged and kissed him to congratulate him.

Location: Duc Ba Cathedral is located on Han Thuyen Street, facing down Dong Khoi Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Characteristic: The resplendent Governor’s Palace, completed in 1875, symbolized the regime’s political power in Asia. And five years later, the Duc Ba (Our Lady’s) Cathedral was inaugurated, and became the spiritual and cultural crucible of the French presence in the Orient.

After the first French colonizing force arrived in Vietnam in the mid - 19thcentury, it took only 21 years before the country had a cathedral to match the hulking Gothic edifices of France itself. The cathedral is supposed to represent the glory of the French Empire. Yet, as is always the case with colonization, this attempt to import French traditions into Vietnam transformed the colonizers’ culture in the process. Even though the cathedral is built in a Western architectural style, it has a uniquely Eastern aspect.

Happy Halloween! Halloween is a really fun American holiday – one that people of all ages get into. You’ve probably noticed that some people have decorated their homes for Halloween or have a jack-o-lantern sitting on their front steps. You may also have noticed crazy costumes for sale in the stores or people buying Halloween candy to give to the trick-or-treaters on the 31st. Halloween is definitely a very exciting time of the year and has many of its own special traditions.

It often happens that when a movie is successful, it is translated to other mediums. Hairspray is a comedy about Baltimore in the 1960s. It was released as a movie in 1988, and it became a classic. In 2002, Hairspray was made into a Broadway Musical that was also very successful. Now that musical is being made into a new film.

Hairspray is one of Marni’s favorite movies. Listen to her talk to Kevin about the new version of the movie.
